Jewelry That Tells Your Story: The Art of Making Fused Glass Cabochons

Glass has a magic all its own. When it meets fire, it transforms—melting, merging, and taking on a whole new life. Fused glass cabochons are one of my favorite ways to capture that magic. They are tiny worlds of color and light, each one telling its own story through swirls, layers, and sparkle.

At Designs by DRL, I handcraft each cabochon with care, making sure no two are ever alike. It’s a process that blends science, patience, and a whole lot of heart.

The Meaning Behind the Glass

To me, fused glass is more than a material—it’s a canvas. Each piece begins with carefully chosen sheets of colored glass. Every shade carries an emotion, a mood, a feeling. By layering them together, I create depth and dimension, like painting with light.

Just like people, every cabochon is unique. No two melts are ever identical, which means each piece of jewelry made from them is truly one-of-a-kind.

A Handmade Touch That Matters

The process begins by cutting glass into small shapes—transparent, opaque, iridescent, or dichroic (glass with shimmering metallic effects). These are layered like a mosaic, stacked with intention to create the design.

Then comes the transformation: the kiln. The glass is slowly heated to over 1,400 degrees Fahrenheit, where it fuses together into a single, polished piece. Timing and temperature are everything—too hot, and the glass runs; not hot enough, and it won’t fully bond.

Once cooled, the cabochons are shaped, polished, and sometimes fire-finished again for extra brilliance. From start to finish, each one is a labor of love that can take several days.
